Fire, Nitro, Rubber And Smoke
The Drag Racing Memories of Bob McClurg
©2006 Bob McClurg
Car Tech Books
160 pages, Softcover
Bob McClurg's hit or miss start as a photographer in Orange County, Southern California way back in the 1950s eventually became a drag racing future by the mid 60s resulting in the book "Diggers, Funnies, Gassers And Altereds", one of our best selling drag racing titles.
Not just a pretty face, bob is an editor and photojournalist having worked for many of America's key motorsport publishers and was also a consultant on the 1994-2004 Ford Mustang, during this time he wrote the book on the project "Mustang: The Next Generation". So the credentials are better than good, they are excellent.
McClurg takes us into his world back in the 60s and 70s, a time of champions, big names, big personalities and lots of raw drag racing. Think of a big name drag racing legend and Bob has a picture of them somewhere in here; Garlits, Prudhomme, McEwen, Glidden, Enders, Schumacher, Amato, Mazmanian, Liberman, Muldowney and many more.
The cars too parade down memory lane in a flash of tyre smoke; Swamp Rat, Pure Hell, Wynne's Winder, Bounty Hunter, Gold Digger, Warlord III, Stardust Cuda, Bad Habit, Ground Shaker, Rat Poison, Motown Missile, Shockwave and more providing the reader with an insight into the life and times of drag racing before the turn of the century.
This is re-inforced by McClurg's considerable written contribution. The words of someone who was there are far better than those of someone who was not, the book takes us into that world first hand in original words and pictures to make a very worthwhile contribution to the drag racer's bookshelf.
